Adding and Subtracting Numbers of Over Two Digits

Example :    456 + 789 = 1 245

Step 1: Set 456.

Step 2: Add the 7 of 789 to the 4 on 100s’ rod. This gives you 11 on 1000s’ and 100s’ rod and 1 156 as shown.

Step 3: Add the 8 of the remaining 89 to the 5 on 10s’ rod. This gives you 23 on 100s’ and 10s’ and 1 236 as shown.

Step 4: Add the remaining 9 to the 6 on unit rod. This gives you 45 on 10s’ and unit rod. The answer is 1 245.

Example : 3 179 + 5 876 = 9 055

Step 1: Set 3 179.

Step 2: Add the 5 of 5 876 to the 3 on 1000s’ rod. This gives you 8 on 1000s’ rod and 8 179 as shown.

Step 3: Add the 8 of the remaining 876 to the 1 on 100s’ rod. This gives you 9 on 100s’ rod and 8 979 as shown.

Step 4: Add the 7 of the remaining 76 to the 7 on 10s’ rod. This gives you 904 on 1000s’, 100s’ and 10s’ rod and 9 049 as shown.

Step 5: Add the remaining 6 to the 9 on unit rod. This gives you 55 on 10s’ rod and unit rod. The answer is 9 055.

Example :. 623 — 375 = 248

Step 1: Set 623.

Step 2: Subtract the 3 of 375 from the 6 on 100s’ rod. This leaves 3 on 100s’ and 323 as shown.

Step 3: Subtract the 7 of the remaining 75 from the 2 on 10s’ rod by borrowing 1 from the 3 on 100s’ rod. This leaves 25 on 100s’ rod & 10s’ rod and 253 as shown.

Step 4: Subtract the remaining 5 from the 3 on unit rod by borrowing 1 from the 5 on 10s’ rod. This leaves 48 on 10s’ and unit rod. The answer is 248.

Example : 6 342 — 2 547 = 3 795

Step 1: Set 6 342, with 6 on the thousands’ rod and 2 on the ones’.

Step 2: Subtract the 2 of 2 547 from the 6 on 1000s’ rod. This leaves 4 on 1000s’ rod and 4 342 as shown.

Step 3: Subtract the 5 of the remaining 547 from the 3 on 100s’ rod by borrowing 1 from the 4 on 1000s’ rod. This leaves 38 on 1000s’ & 100s’ rod and 3 842 as shown.

Step 4: Subtract the 4 of the remaining 47 from the 4 on 10s’ rod. This leaves 0 on 10s’ rod on 3 802 as shown.

Step 5: Subtract the remaining 7 from the 2 on unit rods by borrowing 1 from the 8 on 10s’ rod. This leaves 795 on 100s’ 10s’ & unit rod. The answer is 3 795.
